Blackjack and CardCounting

Jun 22, 2023 // Categories: Casino Games Rules & Tips.

Over a century ago, casino players tried to find out ways to overcome the house edge and win big money at different casino games. They didn’t care whether it was Sic Bo, Baccarat, Blackjack, or whatever it is, they simply wanted to be ahead of the casino. Keep in mind that this strategy has been declared illegal by all casinos. Anyways, it is completely useless nowadays due to the major changes casinos have made.

Using a mathematical method, card counting consists of keeping track of the cards that have been put in play and finding the probability of getting the card you need to get 21. Let’s say that you are playing with 1 deck shoe, you have a 52 card possibility. If 4 of them are in play, you have another 48 cards that can come in play in the next draw. You would also need to figure out what hand the dealer has. In the 1st few rounds, card counters will bet very low just to get a few cards in the discard pile. By doing so, they could get better winnings as the game proceeds.

Once card counting started to be popular, casinos found the need to put more of a challenge and make players lose more money, after all, this is what they are best at. Once casinos caught on to card counting, they added multiple decks to the game. The more decks you add, the more probabilities you have, and the harder it gets to keep track of the cards to come. To make it even more complicated, casinos started to reshuffles the decks to make the card counters job a lot harder.

Don’t expect to get this strategy right off the bat. This can take several times before even understanding how it works. Once mastered, you have to act as if you are not card counting because if you are caught doing so, let’s just say your night won’t end up too well.

All in all, I do not recommend using card counting in a land based casino and I would even say not to do it all because the consequences of it can be severe. There are stories of people getting “back doored” meaning they were brought in the back and given a serious beating. Another reason not to use this strategy is the simple fact that gambling is meant to be a risk and card counting can take all the fun out of playing blackjack.

* Players must note that card counting is only applicable in land based casinos, using this technique at online casinos is ineffective and completely useless.

  1. Well, no people are not beaten by the guards and their money will not be taken. Believe me ! But to tell the truth, they will be simply not allowed anymore in the B&M (brick & mortar – ie. land based) casino where they were caught counting and winning. Absolutely nothing more.

Also casinos like it to have both ways, many players out there are thinking that they do the count right, but the noise and casino attractions many times make them lose their attention and therefore doing improper bets. Those are the guys which lose more when they count.

And more than that, winning by counting at blackjack don`t come just instantly and in big amounts. It just come you are ahead after many, many, many hours spent at the blackjack table doing it right and whitout anyone to spot what are you doing. You have also to have a talkactive profile while counting and that not easy at all ! And don`t do it at a table with CSM.

Online casinos each shuffle the deck(s) after each hand so counting is irrelevant. Exception is Live Dealer Blackjack but these have usually at least 6 decks and a maximum penetration (shuffle point) of 50%. This means that after 3 decks out of 6 was discarded, a shuffle will be made. This is nowhere near close to overcome the edge, you would need at least a 75% penetration in a 6 deck shoe game. (and at least a 67% penetration with a 2 deck game)
